Was F1 75 a Success or Failure?

On February 18, Formula One held one of the biggest offseason events in their history in honor of the 75th anniversary of the sport. The event featured live performances, team introductions, amazing graphics, as well as the unveiling of each team's livery for the 2025 season.

Author's Note: In this article, I will be talking more about the event as a whole. My thoughts on each team's livery will be discussed in a different article, so stay tuned for that!

Now, going into the event, I'll be honest and say that I did not have the highest of expectations. Usually, whenever F1 attempts to put on an event like this, they overdo it, resulting in the event either being too much or just plain unnecessary. F1 has also never done an event like this where every team will unveil their liveries on the same day, so the lack of knowledge regarding how the event would work added to my skepticism. However, having now watched the event, I can say I was pleasantly surprised.

First and foremost, I felt like it was organized very well. A lot of times with events like this, there will be too many interruptions, whether that be musical performances, commercials, or breaks in the true action. With F1 75, it was streamed live on YouTube, which meant it was free to watch and with no commercials, and the structure was very quick. The amount of time each team had to display their livery, as well as the time they put in between teams, made the show seem quite efficient.

I also loved how each team was given the leeway to use their 10-minute time however they wanted. This added to the uniqueness of the show and kept my attention throughout. I thought Sauber's hype video, as well as McLaren and Ferrari's, were the best of the bunch.

With that said, was every team's usage good? No. I felt like Alpine, who used way too much time on a DJ, did not use their time well, and the fact Red Bull did not do an interview with the drivers/team principal (only team not to do so), was weird.

One of the most important parts when trying to keep the viewer's attention regarding events like this is to use the in-between time wisely. I felt like they did an alright job at this. The MC of the event, Jack Whitehall, definitely had his on and off moments. I did enjoy the different interviews that were conducted, as well as the honoring of the many behind-the-scenes people that go into events like this, or even within the sport in general. I will say though, the negative reaction the FIA received as they were recognized made me laugh a little.

Overall, I liked the event. It was a refreshing departure from the traditional formats we are accustomed to, and while there are certainly some aspects that need to be addressed and improved upon, I believe that hosting an event like this annually could serve as an exciting and innovative way to introduce the new season. The atmosphere was vibrant and engaging, drawing in a diverse crowd that shared a common enthusiasm for the sport.

I also feel that there are numerous opportunities to enhance the event's scale and impact as well. Considering the global nature of Formula 1, I think it would be really cool to hold the event in different countries each year. This would not only celebrate the international spirit of F1 but also allow fans from various regions to experience the excitement firsthand. Each location could bring its unique cultural flavor to the event, enriching the overall experience for attendees and participants alike. By rotating the venue, F1 could tap into the passionate fan bases around the world, embrace a deeper connection with the sport, and expand its reach.

Additionally, incorporating local traditions and festivities into the event could create a more immersive experience, making it memorable for both newcomers and long-time fans.

I'd give the event a 7/10. I think the potential for growth and evolution of this event is big, and I am eager to see how it develops in the coming years, if they choose for this to become an annual event.
