Player Profile - Wyatt Gillett, Diman LB

Who is Wyatt Gillett?

Wyatt Gillett is a 15-year old sophomore Linebacker for the Diman Bengals of Fall River, MA. Spending most of last season as a Scout-Team LB, (Scout-Team practices against Varsity to prepare them for upcoming games by emulating opponents) and also known as one of the tone-setters in the locker room. "He leads by example, not talk," was one of the many praises Head Football Coach Luke Bahry had for Wyatt. One of the first words that comes to mind to describe Wyatt is 'Humble'.

The Offseason

"The offseason is all about getting better." Along with his academic responsibilities of the electricity program at Diman, Wyatt will now set his sights on the football offseason. Gillett has already proven to be one of the leaders of the offseason program as an underclassmen. "He's had the best attendance in the weight room," says Coach Bahry, "We have a board in the weight room that shows when players work out and he was there 40 days in a row as a freshman."

He'd continue, "In fact one of the reasons Wyatt made Varsity specials is because of how much he impressed us last offseason." Yes, even as a sophomore Wyatt has a role on the Varsity team with a key role on special teams. "The biggest thing was his consistency," Bahry beamed, "He's also very enthusiastic on Scout-Team. He's given the offense fits when they play against him. He's very instinctual and hard to block." His performance on the field has been a testament to his athletic ability but can be truly credited to his strict work ethic.

When a young man like Wyatt sets his mind to improving every day and then follows through, it shows maturity and mental strength. Most of us at 15 were all about the wrong things while Wyatt truly cares about his team and setting a strong pattern for himself day-in and day-out. Another word to describe Wyatt is 'Consistent'.

Team-Mentality

A true testament to any man's resolve is what he does when "the camera isn't rolling." Wyatt's dedication to the weight room in the offseason is no accident and is more than just a badge of honor for the young man. "It all starts in the offseason," was Wyatt's response when asked about his future goals on the team. "Getting stronger and more conditioned is what I can do to help this team," was his follow-up.

Notice how he didn't say [how I can get better], he said "how I can help the team." This is a very unique characteristic of Wyatt that is noticeable from the first time you talk to him. A quality that did not go unrecognized by his coach either, who said, "Wyatt is all about team mentality, everything is about the Team for him."

The best way to show his team-first approach is to circle back around to his Scout-Team performance. Wyatt has no personal goals he puts above team-oriented goals even as a 15-year old. He was asked, "Do you have goals for the upcoming playoff game? Either to make a play on Special Teams or to possibly get on the field on Defense?" Without hesitating he responded, "I want to sharpen the offense to be ready for the game. So everyday, Ill show up and give the best of my ability [in practice]." A third word to describe Wyatt is 'Mature.'

Future Prospects

Humble, consistent and mature are three qualities that will define Wyatt far beyond his football career. In the future, Wyatt has thoughts to work with electricity in some capacity, as an electrician or wherever his journey takes him. Through his first two years in Diman's electricity program he's achieved A's, showing he's just as hard a worker in the classroom as he is on the field. The young man will grow up to be a fine adult and will always carry on a proud tradition of the Diman Athletic program.

Hopefully before that, he can continue to be an example within the team, where his coach already sees him being a starter in his final two seasons. "I anticipate him to be starting MLB. He's smart and sharp enough and is a leader." He would add, "One of Wyatt's best quality is that he let's the work do his talking for him, so we need to improve on him being more vocal on the field but I know that will come soon."

Wyatt has a very bright future ahead of him indeed with most likely a lot of good things coming his way. No matter how many compliments he gets on the field, his best quality is just being a really good person. A quality that will serve him well in his future. Humble, consistent and Mature...
