First day of NFL 2021 Free Agency Tampering Period and the New England Patriots have signed eight new faces and resigned another. The team has spent more money on the first day of Free Agency this year than they have in the last 10-years of the period. The team addressed four key positions-of-need in this historic day of cash spending to tie up their defense nicely and add weapons for their recent signee Cam Newton's offensive personnel.
Their new signees are:
- Matt Judon LOLB 4yr/$56 million
- Jalen Mills FS 4yr/$24 million
- Jonnu Smith TE 4yr/$50 million
- Davon Godchaux DT 2yr/$16 million
- Kendrick Bourne WR 3yr/ $22.5 million
- Nelson Agholar WR 2yr/ $26 million
- Henry Anderson DE 2yr/ $7 million
- Hunter Henry TE 3yr/$37 million
The re-signee is:
- Deatrich Wise 4yr/$30 million
This spending spree seemingly came out of nowhere and quickly. The Patriots have been the biggest spenders by far as of the second day of the Free Agency tampering period coming into FA with the most cap space at $63.2 million (spotrac.com). For the first time in a decade the Patriots have tons of cap space due to key players leaving over the last two years and the players who opted out of the 2020 season getting breaks in their team structured salaries. It's apparent the team does not feel the need to be patient while spending this money and adding four offensive weapons and great depth on their defense is exactly what they needed.
Bill's attempting to have a top-5 defense again, while telling Cam Newton (who was signed to a 1-year deal), this is make-or-break for you this year.
