According to ESPN’s Jeff Passan, all-star first baseman Pete Alonso is staying in the Big Apple. Alonso has agreed to a two-year, $54 million contract that includes an opt-out after 2025.
This came after Alonso reportedly rejected several deals by the Mets, including a seven-year, $158 million extension. Alonso looked towards full agency and found the market not as lucrative as he would have hoped. Alonso restarted contract negotiations with Mets’ owner Steve Cohen, and they came to an agreement that is flexible for both sides. Alonso is set to make $30 million this year and will have the option to opt-in for $24 million in year two or re-enter free agency in 2026. In 2025, Alonso will be the highest paid first baseman in the league.
Alonso, in his age 30 season, has been known as a premium power bat since he entered the league in 2019. The six-year veteran averages 43 home runs and an OPS of .854 per season. The Mets’ cleanup hitter will have more consistent traffic on the base paths with the signing of outfielder Juan Soto. Soto has a career OBP of .421, which is the highest of an active player with a minimum of 3,000 plate appearances.
The Mets have had an active offseason, signing key pieces and retaining the core that led them to the NLCS last year. Will this be the year the Mets win a pennant in a loaded National League? If so, this will be their first since 2015. The Mets’ season will start in Houston on March 27th.
